Illuminating High-powered Objectives

Infinity's instruments and lenses are unique because they allow multi-mode illuminators to be attached directly to them. Direct attachment, however, is only worthwhile at relatively close working distances. Even though Infinity's selection of adapters would technically permit it, there would be no purpose using a 21mm fiber optic ring light on the front of Model K2 at a working distance of two meters—the light would never "register." On the other hand, a 66mm ring light at 200mm would be possible.

While designing our instruments and lenses, we carefully considered which objectives and front housings can mate with appropriate illuminators and which cannot (or should not). For closer-focusing objectives (such as those used with Model KC/S and InfiniTube), an extensive selection of adapters and properly-chosen dimensions allow direct attachment of ring lights from 66mm down to 21mm inside diameter.

Our IF-Series, Achrovid™ and LWD-Series objectives have been designed for Model KC/S, InfiniTube Standard and InfiniTube Special so that their long working distances permit external illumination at even the highest magnifications. Due to their long stand-off, one or two fiber-optic light guides can be positioned near the objective. Also, intense halogen lamps will also prove suitable. These built-in design considerations make illuminating objects as simple as possible–even at relatively high magnifications.

When objects are flat and highly reflective, use of our coaxial illuminators is recommended. These interface with our InfiniTube, Model KC/S, and Model K2/S.
